Spring Cleaning Your Garage: Easy Tips for a Fresh Start

Spring is the perfect time to give your garage a good clean, and it doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Alongside our sister blog on Getting your Garage Ready for Spring, we have co-ordinated with the experienced team at Oh So Organised to bring you some straightforward tips to get your garage looking fresh and organised.

Spring Cleaning Tips for the Garage

Start with the Ceiling and Walls

  • Dust and Cobwebs: Use a long-handled duster or a broom to knock down cobwebs and dust from the ceiling and walls, especially in corners where they tend to accumulate.

  • Spot Cleaning: Wipe down any stains or marks on the walls with a damp cloth or a mild detergent solution.

Pull Everything Out

  • Wipe Things Down: Take everything out of the garage, then wipe down surfaces and items with a damp cloth. Once cleaned, put everything back in an organised manner.

  • Discard Broken or Unused Items: Get rid of broken brooms, mops, empty boxes, or items that no longer work. These often gather dust and take up unnecessary space.

Sweep the Floor Thoroughly

  • Dry Sweep: Sweep the entire garage floor to remove dust, dirt, and debris. Push everything toward the centre for easy collection.

  • Wet Mop: After sweeping, mop the floor with warm water and mild detergent to lift any residual dirt or oil stains.

Focus on Windows and Doors

  • Window Cleaning: Clean any windows with glass cleaner and wipe down the sills.

  • Garage Door: Wipe down the interior and exterior of the garage door with a water and mild detergent mix to remove grime or grease.

Clean the Light Fixtures

  • Dusting: Dust off light fixtures with a dry cloth or a duster.

  • Wipe Down: If they’re particularly dirty, use a damp cloth for a more thorough clean.

Check Kids’ Bikes

  • Assess for Fit: Take a look at items like your kids’ bikes to see if they’ve outgrown them over the school holidays. If they have, consider selling or donating the bike to recoup some money or to support a good cause.

Tackle the Corners

  • Vacuum Edges: Use a vacuum with a hose attachment to clean the corners and edges where dust and dirt often collects.

Organise Upper Storage Space

  • Use a Shelving Kits: Maximise your garage’s upper storage areas with our variety of shelving units which fit easily on our Rail or Mounting Blocks, providing a sleek, space-saving solution to keep your garage organised and clutter-free.

Shelving Kits are useful for upper areas in the garage

Clean Tools and Equipment

  • Wipe Down: Use a damp cloth to clean your tools and equipment. This helps prevent rust and keeps them in good working condition.

  • Oiling: Apply a small amount of oil to tools that need it to prevent rust.

Garage Sink and Drains

  • Sink Cleaning: Scrub down the garage sink with a cleaner to remove grime.

  • Drain Cleaning: Clear any blockages and freshen up the drain by pouring baking soda followed by vinegar.

Refresh the Air

  • Air Out the Garage: Open the garage door and windows to let in fresh air.

  • Odor Neutraliser: Place an open box of baking soda or an air freshener in the garage to keep it smelling fresh.

Check for Mould or Mildew

  • Inspection: Look for signs of mould or mildew, especially in dark or damp areas. Clean it with a mould remover or a bleach and water mixture if needed.

We hope these will prove useful and easy steps to creating a garage that's clean, fresh, and organised in no time, making it a more functional space for you and your family this Spring season!
